Environmental Monitors on Lobster Traps and Large Trawlers (eMOLT)
Partnering with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation
CFF is a partner on the “Environmental Monitors on Lobster Traps and Large Trawlers” (eMOLT) program with NEFSC and the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation. Through this program, oceanographic sensors are attached to fishing gear and collect temperature, depth, and dissolved oxygen data from fishing grounds. While fishing, the sensors gather data that is wirelessly transmitted to an eMOLT computer on the vessel once the sensor is brought to the surface. This data is then accessible to the vessel captains and crew, and is automatically transmitted to servers on shore where it is used to inform ocean circulation and weather models. Read more about the eMOLT program on NOAA’s webpage here: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/new-england-mid-atlantic/climate/partnering-fishing-industry-monitor-northeast-shelf.
